INDUSTRY FACTS
The most recent industry statistics are from 2006 and can be viewed in the Community of European Shipyards Associations yearbook 2006 - 2007.
In 2006, 5500 people in the UK were employed in ship maintenance, repair, conversion and new building.
The main market in the UK is for ship maintenance, repair and conversion, with a limited number of large vessels being built in the UK each year. Commercial build orders are difficult to win outside the super yacht and leisure boat industry.
Below is a table that illustrates this by showing that the UK had the second biggest turnover in Europe after Germany for ship maintenance, repair and conversion.
