Totnes based Docking Solutions has just won a prestigious contract from the RNLI, based in Poole, as part of its Coventina project.
The work involved for the RNLI consists of the design, manufacture and installation of galvanised steel pontoons and aluminium access structures at its North Quay and West Quay lifeboat construction facility. The total run length of the pontoons are 70 metres at North Quay and 40 metres at West Quay, with each pontoon up to 23 metres long and 3.5 metres wide, which rise and fall with the tide, together with access bankseats, 18 metre long ramps and 9 metre long steps.
The RNLI has an active fleet of over 340 lifeboats ranging from 3.8–17m in length, and is required to build six all-weather lifeboats every year, as well as maintain its existing fleet over the next 20 years. The RNLI are currently constructing a new £11.2 million national facility for the production and maintenance of their unique all weather lifeboats. The Coventina project is a major investment for the RNLI and involves the total demolition of the existing Lifeboat Maintenance Centre, and construction of a new state of the art shipyard and Lifeboat Centre.
Docking Solutions produces bespoke pontoons, bridges and access systems tailored to meet a client’s specific needs. Will Robertson, Contracts Manager at Docking Solutions said, “Our work involves major projects all over the country. We are delighted to be asked to supply these unique pontoons and access systems which will enhance the facilities at the RNLI’s construction facility.”
