Double Dutch delivery for Svitzer UK

Svitzer’s UK fleet has received a boost with delivery of two Damen ASD 3212 tugs ‘Svitzer Kent’ and ‘Svitzer Deben’ for their Thames and Felixstowe operations respectively.

A recent arrival in Rotterdam was BigLift Shipping’s heavy-lift vessel Happy Star making its first visit to the port, loaded with 22 assorted Damen vessels built in the Far East. Svitzer Kent and Svitzer Deben were part of the consignment and after completion at Damen’s facilities in the Netherlands made the short hop across the southern North Sea to their new homes. Svitzer Kent follows the 2014 delivery of a similar ASD 3212 Svitzer London also for the Thames fleet.

Both vessels are built to Lloyd’s Register classification +100 A1, Escort Tug, *IWS + LMC, UMS and fly the UK flag. Svitzer Kent is additionally equipped for fire-fighting operations (fifi 1) from two 1,200m3/hr main engine driven pumps supplying water/foam monitors on the bridge deck forward of the wheelhouse.

Main dimensions are: LOA 32.7m, beam OA 12.82m and draught aft 5.37m (Kent) 5.25m (Deben) with tank capacities including: fuel oil 146.4m3 and 15.5m3 fresh water. The Thames-based tug has capacity for 12.5m3 of foam. Each tug is powered by twin Caterpillar 3516C HD+ TA/D main engines developing 5,050bkW (6,772bhp) in total, driving Rolls-Royce US255 P30CP azimuth thrusters. Performance figures are 80tbp and speed 14.6kn (both ahead), auxiliary equipment includes two Caterpillar C6.6 TA 230/400V gensets.

Both tugs have a hydraulic double-drum render/recovery anchor and towing winch forward providing 100t pull (rendering) and 60t (recovery) and 200t brake load. Svitzer Deben also has a single-drum towing winch aft with spooling device and warping head: 100t SWL Mampaey towing hooks are provided aft on both tugs.

Accommodation on both tugs is provided for 10 persons in six cabins all of which are air-conditioned as are the galley, mess/dayroom, switchboard room, dry store and sanitary facilities.
