ERIKS Marine exhibits at SEAWORK for the first time

Fri, 18 July 2014

ERIKS is the third largest Industrial distributor in the world. Globally some 8,000 people, with the UK division employing 2000 people. Operating in all of the main shore side industries including, steel, paper, mining and quarrying, pharmaceutical, oil and gas automotive, water treatment. Most recently thanks to our products, technical expertise, investment  and application knowledge we have increased our offer for the marine industry,

ERIKS has been servicing ship builders and operators (particularly the naval sector) for a number of year but now we are strengthening our offer to these areas with more dedicated employees and specific services. ERIKS supplies all the major mechanical components from gaskets and seals, motors, bearings belts & pulleys, to pumps, motors and alternators. Not only do we distribute products from a supply point of view but we also have an extensive in-house production of bearings, including split roller bearings and slewing rings, in-house production of seal and gaskets, hydraulic repair and refurbishment and a large national electro mechanical engineering capability. We also offer a full range of condition monitoring services.

It is these condition monitoring services and on board experience and expertise that brought ERIKS Marine in to play at very short notice. A cruise ship was in UK waters, and a spontaneaous fire broke out in the main E/R control room switch board. The crew very rapidly put the fire out and there were no injuries, thankfully, but ERIKS were called out to carry out thermograhic inspections to try and determine the cause of the fire. Such was ERIKS’ expertise that the MCA insisted our team of two sail with the vessel for more intensive inspections, well done guys.

From a marine point of view, other than specific product, we are clearly building our experience around condition monitoring, and laser alignment of generator to gearbox etc, we have a lot of experience in motor and alternator rewinds, fault finding, re-balancing, in fact we have the largest dynamic balancing facility in the country. These skills coupled with our extensive in house engineering, Core Competence Centres and a stock of approximately £100 mio engineering components, puts us in a strong position to rapidly respond to the marine world’s needs locally or on an international scale thanks to a dedicated international logistics division (ERIKS International).

Two key members of the ERIKS team that are involved in this continued growth are Dave Clarke, who runs ERIKS International and a number of agencies around the world. Dave has extensive experience of working with overseas markets, zero rated VAT issues, Ship’s Spares in transit, and all the paperwork that goes with. The other is Simon Hemper, who has been brought into the ERIKS family for his 32 years marine experience, not just as a hands on deep sea, qualified Marine Engineer, but also for his International commercial experience with some of the major suppliers and manufacturers in the global marine market. You can expect to see these two at forthcoming marine exhibitions.

Over the next 18 months our aim will be to develop and strengthen our presence and trust within the Marine market, working with many of our long term partners such as SKF, WEG, Econosto our in house valve company, Revolvo our in house bearing production organisation, and several more to achieve this. We will continue to be looking at increasing both our product and service offerings and bringing our innovative technologies to the marine market place.
