Safety kit initiative for UK fishermen

Tue, 30 May 2017

A new initiative aims to provide local fishermen operating out of coastal locations in the UK with essential safety equipment in line with Marine and Coastguard Agency guidance for fishing vessel operators who fish near windfarms.

The new programme, developed by EDF Energy Renewables, has seen Life Cell Marine Safety provide Life Cell models to local fishermen between Hartlepool and Saltburn by the Sea, ensuring they have readily accessible safety equipment in the event of an emergency.

James Wilson, local fishing liaison officer with EDF Energy Renewables, said: “Our aim has always been to ensure that the wind farm can co-exist safely and effectively with local fishing activities.”

“The dedicated new fishing support programme will provide targeted assistance for specific fishing activity needs and will hopefully provide a positive contribution to the activities of local fishing groups and individual operators.”

The Life Cell is a flotation device, which brings together all safety equipment in one handy kit. Having all safety equipment in one place significantly reduces the chance of these safety items being lost or unable to be found in time to abandon the vessel.

Local fishermen can find out more details on the new programme, including accessing Life Cell for their fishing vessel, at the Pinpoint Electronics on stand PB99 at this year’s Seawork International.

Pinpoint Electronics Ltd distributes ‘new and innovative’ navigation, radio tracking and safety equipment and is a distributor for the Life Cell flotation device.
