City Of Rotterdam Car Carrier Sailing With SOLASOLV® Sunscreens

Fri, 21 August 2015

Solar Solve Marine, located within the Port of Tyne, South Shields, recently visited the City of Rotterdam, a 21,143 GRT car carrier which regularly transports cars to and from the Port of Tyne.  She was delivered in March 2011 with 15 SOLASOLV® sunscreens installed at her navigation bridge windows by Solar Solve’s Japanese Distributor.  She is one of two sister vessels built by Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation in Japan, and is used around Northern Europe for moving new Nissan cars from its Sunderland plant - the European home of Nissan - to it’s markets.  Her rounded bow profile is said to reduce wind resistance, leading to lower fuel consumption.

Solar Solve have specialised in providing sun and glare protection to the marine and offshore industry for almost 30 years and the company is celebrating its 40th anniversary in business this year (1975 – 2015).  The SOLASOLV® brand of anti-glare screen is installed at the windows of all types of ships, rigs and cranes worldwide. Regarded as essential safety equipment, the screens effectively reject up to 87% of heat and up to 93% of glare from the sun, significantly reducing eye-strain and fatigue, and improving outward visibility.  SOLASAFE® screens are guaranteed for 7 years and are the only screens in the world to be Type Approved by DNV-GL, Lloyds’ and ABS.

The Captain of the vessel, Rusland Urmov, was very enthusiastic about the benefits of the screens and commented; “They are great, we use them daily and they are a big help against the sun glare that the vessel experiences when sailing.”

The Solar Solve team were invited to visit the vessel in August and were taken on a tour of the ship by the vessel’s shipping agent, Fairmont Shipping. The sister vessel, City of St. Petersburg, which also operates in and out of the Port of Tyne, is currently anchored while awaiting drydock after 5 years of service.  She also has SOLASOLV® sunscreens installed.
