WRAS Approves Exalto’s Drinking Water Bearing Material
Fri, 08 February 2013
Exalto UK Ltd is delighted to announce it can now supply bearings made from WRAS approved material for applications in drinking water pumps. Tests on the new composite material, Maritex AquaPure, are complete and The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme’s approval permits Maritex AquapPure bearings to be used for submersible borehole pumps, booster pumps and vertical line shaft drinking water pumps.
Developed specifically for cold potable water, AquaPure is a lubricious, tough material made from high strength chemically resistant thermoset resin re-enforced with synthetic fibres and makes a great addition to Exalto’s existing bearing product portfolio.
Exalto UK have been supplying rubber cutlass bearings to both the Pump and Marine industries for the past 16 years. With clients ranging from some of the world’s largest Pump Manufacture companies to International Marine Chandleries, they export to over 33 countries and have an established reputation for quality and service. General Manager Dennis Rawle has high hopes for their new material and comments:
“We are delighted with the approval and that AquaPure meets WRAS’ high standards - we know this is a really strong product and have had lots of industry interest already”
The material itself is proving impressive amongst international customers. The senior maintenance planner for a leading Australian brewery conducted a 3 month trial using AquaPure when they became aware that the material could be used for their pasteurising conveyor bearings which were typically replaced every year at quite an expense:
“After three months continuous running we could not measure any wear so it was decided to replace the entire drive line with Maritex AquaPure bearings. I am pleased to advise that after two years the bearings are still within tolerance and at that rate are twice as good as the OEM product. In fact they are better than that because they do not scour the shaft as does the OEM product, they remain within tolerance so the rate of wear indicates we can count on at least another year’s service life and the bonus is the bearings cost less than half of what the OEM’s PEEK bearings cost us”
With lubricity approaching PTFE, Maritex Aquapure has none of the frustrating creep associated with this material. Maritex Aquapure offers practically zero moisture absorption, good compressive strength toughness and chemical resistance coupled with excellent low start and dynamic friction. Used in normal cold water operating temperatures the material has outstanding dimensional stability in wet, dry, or alternating wet & dry operating conditions. Maritex Aquapure is self-lubricating and can comfortably cater for distinctly different requirements such as high speed water lubricated pump bearing applications as well as dead slow turning, heavy loaded and mandatory zero grease bearing applications. It is easy to machine to requirements and is cost effective.
WRAS approval is required for any material used in creating products for drinking water or portable cold water applications in the UK, failure to do so can result in a breach of water industry regulations, the purpose of which is to prevent the contamination of drinking water supplies.
