8 Mar 2010 - An online auction site has been launched in Norway, dealing in used and surplus maritime assets
ShipX is the name of a new Internet auction site for shipping. It is intended to help maximise trading value of used and surplus assets in the global maritime community. ShipX was launched in February 2010, to offer a new service to sellers, traders, brokers and buyers.

The developers say that online auctions are successfully used in many other industries, and with increased ship breaking and a new focus on liquidation of surplus stock to improve cash flow, the new site offers the opportunity of maximising asset value in a competitive bidding environment. Both sellers and buyers are said to benefit from optimal allocation of these assets

8 Mar 2010 - 50 Ships carrying passengers and crew are trapped in Baltic Sea Ice
Chaos continues in the Baltic Sea on Friday as up to 50 ships carrying thousands of passengers and crew became trapped in ice.
More than 1,000 people have been trapped on two passenger ferries and two cargo ships stuck in ice in the Baltic Sea off Sweden's east coast.

8 Mar 2010 - Huge wave kills 2 and injures 14 aboard Mediterranean cruise ship
A 26ft high rogue wave has hit a cruise ship in the Mediterranean Sea, killing two people and injuring a further 14.

The Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty was carrying almost 2,000 people and travelling from Barcelona to Genoa when it is believed to have been hit.

The wave is reported to have smashed the glass windshields of the ship, killing a German man and an Italian man and injuring 14 others.

8 Mar 2010 - Malaysia and Indonesia step up security on The Strait of Malacca
Malaysia and Indonesia said on Thursday they are stepping up security in the Strait of Malacca, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes, following the Singapore navy's warning of possible attacks on oil tankers.

The Singapore navy "has received indication a terrorist group is planning attacks on oil tankers in the Malacca Strait," the Singapore Shipping Association said in an advisory. "The terrorists' intent is probably to achieve widespread publicity and showcase that it remains a viable group."

It did not name a group or say where the intelligence came from.

8 Mar 2010 - STX europe sign letter or intent for new shipyard in Brazil to build offshore support vessels & gas carriers.
To meet the growing market in Brazil, STX Europe will expand its shipbuilding capacity for Offshore & Specialized vessels by setting up a new shipyard. The yard will be located in Fortaleza, in the Ceará state of Brazil.

8 Mar 2010 - Wind power and Shipyard Industries make joint call for investments in ships for offshore wind expansion
SSA participated in the joint meeting of European Shipyards and EWEA on 24th February to discuss the possibility of building ships for the offshore wind energy industry.
Investments in new ships totalling €2.4 billion are needed for the predicted growth of
offshore wind. By 2020, the installation of thousands of offshore wind turbines, as
well as the necessary substructures and cables, is foreseen
The European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) and the Community of European Shipyards' Association (CESA) are calling on the European Commission and the Euro-pean Investment Bank (EIB) to support the building of new ships to serve the expand-ing offshore wind energy market over the coming years. EWEA and CESA urge the European Commission to develop programmes and funding mechanisms, and for the European Investment Bank to take the necessary measures to support the risk re-lated to the necessary significant investments, to ensure that a sufficient number of in-stallation vessels are available to the offshore wind industry.

8 Mar 2010 - SLAPSA investigating capsized cargo vessel
In excess of 15,000 tonnes of cargo, valued in the millions of dollars and bound for Barbados, are now at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea after a large container vessel sank last Sunday night.

No lives were lost or crew injured when the six-year-old vessel ANGELN, part of the Miami, Florida-based Bernuth Line, sank just after midnight about two miles off Vieux Fort, St Lucia.

8 Mar 2010 - PD Ports has been crowned as the Most Outstanding Service Carrier of the Year
PD Ports, the operator of North East port, Teesport, has been crowned as the Most Outstanding Service Carrier of the Year in 2009 by leading UK retailer, ASDA, at its annual National Carrier of the Year awards ceremony.

The award was won by PD Ports for its Logical Link service - a coastal feeder container shipping service offering a next day connection between Felixstowe in the south of England and Teesport in the north, which runs three days per week.

ASDA has used the Logical Link service since it launched in January 2009, to ship goods destined for its northern markets into Teesport, where the retailer operates a 360,000ft distribution centre.
