The scheme aims to help innovators develop novel ideas to make offshore turbines more efficient and help cut the cost of offshore wind energy.

Energy and Climate Change Minister Greg Barker said:
“Wind energy has great potential here in the UK but we need to ensure turbines work in the most efficient way to cut the costs of generating green power.  We have already run a successful first round of our offshore wind innovation scheme and we now have £5million more up for grabs to help companies get their designs off the drawing board and out to sea.”

You’ll recall that there have already been successful bidders to the first round including David Brown Gear Systems Ltd, Huddersfield, NGenTec, Edinburgh, Osbit Power, Riding Mill, Northumberland and OGN North Sea, Tyne and Wear.

This second round  is open to a range of different innovative designs, including components used in wind turbines (5MW plus), foundations, connection and transmission, installation, operation and maintenance.  Bids will be assessed by DECC, the TSB and independent advisers and will be judged against a range of criteria.

Organisations interested in applying for funding can register to attend a briefing event on 22 May.  Applications must be received online by 12pm on 29 June.  Successful bidders will be notified in Autumn this year.

Organisations will be able to apply at Offshore Wind Component Technologies Development and Demonstration Scheme.  There will be a briefing event for potential applicants on 22nd May, details of which will also be available at http://www.decc.gov.uk/en/content/cms/funding/funding_ops/innovation/owctdd_scheme/owctdd_scheme.aspx.
