Process Safety Courses

Thu, 31 May 2012

The National Skills Academy Process industries launched a new series of Training Courses at the end of 2011 to develop Process Safety Awareness. Aimed at Directors and Leaders of sites and companies the course aims to make the responsible people aware of their obligations and getting them to think through an action plan. The course is called Process Safety Leadership for Senior Executives (PSL) and costs £6,000 for a one day course for up to 10 people – i.e. the management team of a site or company.

The course is underpinned by a training standard written by industry, stakeholders and the HSE and is delivered by specialist Process Safety providers who have to be vetted to deliver the course by an expert panel set up with industry members.

Because of the success of the course – with 80 courses booked since last autumn we have launched a new course Process Safety Management Foundations (PSMF) – a two day course aimed at the tier of managers below the owners/directors. This course retails at £8,500 for the 2 days and for up to 12 people and it was launched at the end of May 2012 – we already have 50 companies making bookings.

The above was by way of introduction to something which I think is applicable across more sectors. In fact we already know this because of unsolicited calls from companies who want to attend. We run both in house course and open courses (where the single rate for attendance is £750 for PSL and £850 for PSMF) and we have had bookings from companies linked to but not in our sectors.

The courses are supported by the Health and Safety Executive and Judith Hackitt the Chair of the HSE is a personal supporter of the courses and has tasked the Academy with delivering the courses to as many high hazard companies as we can. The Academy has been asked to provide briefings to the HSEs senior Inspectors in the coming months.

The Academy is seeking to work in partnership with other National Skills Academies and Sector Skills Councils, and with the support of semta is offering to engage with employers in this sector to develop solutions to raise awareness of process safety or ‘mindful leadership’.

If you are interested in finding out more please contact the Academy.  Individuals are welcome to participate in open courses to experience the course, before committing to a full in-house programme.
